The transition towards green hydrogen and Power-to-X technologies will depend not only on production capacity, but also on the availability of efficient transport infrastructure and a workforce capable of planning, operating and maintaining increasingly complex energy systems.
The International Power-to-X Hub is organising an online PtX.Community Call focused on cost-effective and scalable green hydrogen delivery networks in South Africa and Namibia. The session will take place on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, from 13:00 to 14:00 CEST, via Microsoft Teams, and is open to all interested participants.
From hydrogen production to integrated delivery networks
The session will present recent research examining how pipelines, railways, road transport and ports could support emerging Power-to-X value chains across South Africa and Namibia.
Using a spatial cost-optimisation model, the study maps hydrogen flows between production and consumption locations and identifies potentially competitive delivery pathways for:
- compressed gaseous hydrogen;
- liquefied hydrogen;
- green ammonia; and
- liquid organic hydrogen carriers.
The analysis considers different infrastructure development scenarios and timeframes, including the possible role of the Boegoebaai port and the development of integrated cross-border hydrogen corridors.
The speakers will be the studyβs authors: Laurens Cloete from Rebel, Luanita Snyman-van der Walt from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, and Jan Zerhusen from LBST. The presentations will be followed by an interactive exchange on the transferability of the methodology to other regions and its implications for infrastructure planning and investment.
Relevance for vocational education and training
For the PRISTINE VET project, this discussion is particularly relevant because the development of hydrogen infrastructure creates new competence requirements across several professional profiles.
Future technicians, operators, engineers and infrastructure planners will require interdisciplinary knowledge covering hydrogen handling, transport systems, logistics, safety, digital monitoring, maintenance and environmental compliance. Vocational education and training systems must therefore anticipate the complete hydrogen value chain rather than focus exclusively on individual technologies such as electrolysers or fuel cells.
The session also illustrates the importance of connecting technical education with real infrastructure scenarios, investment planning and regional development. These insights can support the development of practical, industry-relevant curricula and training programmes capable of preparing learners for emerging green-energy occupations.
